Understand the window assembly
CAL FIRE recommends dual-pane windows with at least one pane of tempered glass. Selecting an improvement also means checking the frame, surrounding wall, and installation requirements; the glass specification is only one part of the proposed work.
Document the existing window sizes, operation, accessible labels, condition, and nearby materials. Missing information should be resolved before ordering replacements.
Review door edges and unintended gaps
Include visible gaps around exterior openings in the assessment. Record where seals or surrounding materials are damaged, then identify a suitable repair for that particular assembly.
A sealing proposal must preserve required drainage, ventilation, access, and operation. Confirm any work to exterior doors or garage-door seals within the agreed project scope; availability and the need for a specialist depend on the assembly.
Compare repair and replacement options
- Identify which openings need repair, replacement, or further inspection.
- Confirm product dimensions, glazing specifications, and compatibility with the existing wall.
- Account for removal, adjoining finishes, flashing, and installation access.
- Confirm applicable approvals and the qualifications required for the work.
Keep product, installation, and maintenance records
Agree the product information, completed-work photographs, and operating instructions to be provided with the installation. These records support future upkeep and can help answer an insurer’s questions about completed mitigation.
Costs depend on the number and size of openings, selected assemblies, existing damage, access, and finish work. Use the calculator’s sample budget as an illustration, then request a property-specific scope and price. No window or door upgrade makes a home fireproof.
