A1 EMBER HOME HARDENING / EXTERIOR HOME HARDENING

Roof edges, gutters, and ember-entry gaps.

Leaves, needles, and vulnerable roof-edge details need attention as part of wildfire preparedness. We assess accessible gutters, roof-edge gaps, flashing, and drainage to define suitable repairs, gutter-cover options, and an ongoing debris-maintenance plan.

Start with existing conditions

The assessment should record visible roof-edge gaps, gutter condition, accumulated leaves or needles, and areas that cannot be inspected safely. It should also identify concerns that need review by an appropriately qualified roofing professional.

CAL FIRE’s home hardening guidance calls for clearing roof and gutter debris and considering noncombustible gutter covers and a metal drip edge.

Connect gutter protection with the roof edge

Gutter covers, flashing, attachments, and drainage need to work with the existing roof. Define each component’s condition and compatibility before choosing what to repair or replace.

  • Metal gutter condition, attachment and transitions.
  • Drip-edge flashing and other roof-edge details needing review.
  • Noncombustible gutter-guard compatibility and continuous coverage.
  • Drainage, inspection access and the selected product’s installation instructions.

Specify repairs, products, and access

The agreed scope identifies the components to retain, repair, or replace; selected products; safe access; and responsibility for related roof work. Questions about roofing materials, concealed damage, or replacement work need an appropriately qualified roofing professional.

Gutter covers still require inspection and maintenance. The plan should explain how debris will be removed and how gutters, roof edges, and drains will remain accessible for future checks.

Keep a record and a maintenance schedule

Retain photographs of completed details, product information and maintenance instructions. Revisit the system as vegetation and debris conditions change. The schedule should fit the property rather than assume one cleaning interval works for every home.

This work is part of broader home hardening. It is not a guarantee against ignition or a substitute for reviewing other openings, exterior connections and nearby vegetation.
