Begin beneath and around the deck
CAL FIRE recommends removing combustible material beneath decks. The assessment should record access, stored items, accumulated debris, and nearby vegetation before defining repairs or material changes.
Discuss how the area will remain accessible for cleaning and inspection after the work. An upgrade that hides an existing maintenance problem still needs a plan for that condition.
Review the deck as an assembly
- Identify visible decking, railing, supports, and attachment details.
- Record damage or concealed connections requiring further investigation.
- Confirm product suitability for the proposed application and local requirements.
- Separate maintenance work from repairs needing a qualified structural or construction specialist.
Plan the fence connection and gate together
CAL FIRE recommends noncombustible materials where a fence connects to a home. Review the transition, adjoining posts, gate hardware, and nearby vegetation when considering steel fencing or gate work.
Define the section to be changed, property boundaries, gate operation, and access needs. Material selection alone does not resolve the details where a new section meets an existing fence or wall.
Define scope, cost, and maintenance
A useful proposal states what will be retained, removed, repaired, or replaced. It should account for dimensions, demolition and disposal, foundations or posts, site access, finishes, and any required approvals.
Keep selected product details and photographs with the completed-work record. Set a maintenance plan for debris, vegetation, damage, and moving hardware. Deck and fence improvements support a wider home hardening plan; they do not guarantee protection from wildfire.
Plan your project with A1 Ember
Share photographs of the deck or fence and its connection to the house when requesting a visit. We prioritize the Greater Bay Area and San Diego County; for other U.S. locations, ask about project availability. Scope and project requirements are confirmed for each address.
